Discover where we live, as many people choose to do, and pay a visit to our historic township which is situated just 20 minutes drive from the heart of Adelaide, via the Heysen Tunnels, and Southern Eastern Freeway. Mount Barker lies within the home country of the Peramangk Aboriginal people. Mount Barker was named after the explorer, Captain Collett Barker.
The Mount Barker Summit provides a ‘grandstand’ view from where you’ll enjoy panoramic vistas of the surrounding area from Mount Lofty to the north west, Mount Barker Township and the Cream Bowl to the west, lakes and Coorong to the south and the Bremer Valley to the east. There are walking trails, both long and short, to experience at the Summit. Picturesque Mount Barker is a great place to spend the day shopping, playing sport, or experiencing some unique history and beauty by car, or on foot. Enjoy our cafes and restaurants, whilst Heritage Walking Tours combine history and retail at just about every turn. Mount Barker is also the home of SteamRanger, a popular heritage train.
